Believe It Or Not, This Is Worse Than Death

Dear Reader,

Some people die decades before their actual death.

They spend years and years performing the same tasks, living in a rut.

They get up at the same time, usually after hitting the snooze button four or five times.

They put on the same clothes, eat the same breakfast, drive the same route, and head to the same office where they press the same buttons and say the same phrases over and over again.

And when these folks get a break, they’re still on autopilot — drinking the same beer for the rest of ever — even going to the same vacation spots again and again.

That doesn’t sound like life, does it? It sounds like being a robot…

Worse Than Death?

It’s a fate worse than death.

It’s a long life of “What’s the point?” It’s years and years of letting the ease of inertia come before the desire to do anything new. No wonder we have more diagnosed cases of depression and anxiety than ever before…

This doesn’t have to happen to you, though. With a simple change, you can live a life of meaning and accomplishment.

And it all starts with a single step.

But first, let me tell you a quick story.

The Birthday Party

Just the other day, I was at a birthday party for my son’s friend. He’s a pretty reserved little guy, so I was surprised the party was held at a tae kwon do academy.

The little kids were running around like crazy, but then the master started guiding them through a series of exercises. They began to listen and focus. The giggles faded away and every child paid rapt attention.

Next, the master and his assistants did a board breaking demonstration. The children sat on the mat watching with wide eyes.

Then the master turned to the birthday boy and said, “It’s your turn now!” The boy looked at the master with a shocked look on his face, then turned to his mom — was it possible? Could he do this?

The master patted the kid on the back, and the assistant prepared the board. After a few sentences of instruction, it was time. The master stepped back. It was just the birthday boy and the board. We all counted together. “One, two, THREE!”

And this little kid — this shy, quiet little boy drew his hand back and with a quick chopping motion, he broke that board right in half.

It was silent for a second, then the room broke out in applause. You’ve never seen a grin bigger than the one on that kid’s face.

How to Find Confidence

Imagine the confidence he felt! I mean, you could tell this kid did not think that was possible — never in a million years did he expect to break that board.

But he put himself in the position to try, to learn, and he did it! Not only did he accomplish this seemingly impossible achievement, he did it in front of a room full of his peers.

It’s a wonderful sensation. You can experience it, too. And like I said — it all starts with a single step. A step onto the mat at your local martial arts studio.

If you want to feel confident in any situation life throws at you, martial arts will get you there. You just need to get in there and get started.

It’s about more than exercise — it’s about learning to push yourself, having respect for yourself and others, dealing with frustration, defending yourself, connect with inner peace,

Just by stepping onto the mat that very first time, you’ve changed from someone willing to lead a dead, robotic life to someone who’s ready to learn and grow.

By the time you tie on your white belt for the first time, you’re already far more alive than all the folks who are just sitting on the couch letting life pass them by.

This applies to the rest of your life, too. Everyone should get started and earn their white belt — again and again and again.

Now, what do I mean by that?

I don’t mean it literally — not necessarily.

I mean, sure, you can train tae kwon do, then take up jiu jitsu, then start krav maga — if that fulfills you. I’m talking about other areas of your life, though.

This is about your willingness to give up the couch and the inertia and trade it in on the uncertainty and excitement of trying something new.

See, you’re always a white belt at something.

There’s always going to be something you’ve never tried before, and some of them you’re going to be terrible at. Does that mean you should shy away from these things? Absolutely not.

Trying something new and finding out that it’s really hard is all part of the learning process.

Ideally, you should be always learning. If you want to live an extraordinary life, you should always be willing to begin something new and start from the bottom.

How Do You Get Past the Fear of Failure?

It’s simple — you just have to embrace the suck. You have to embrace being bad at something and get ready to learn. When you can lean into that discomfort and allow yourself to start from scratch, that’s when real growth occurs and real life begins.

You, too, can feel the pride and accomplishment that little kid felt. It’s an amazing feeling — it’s called really feeling ALIVE.

My direct advice to you is to think of something new you want to try right now and start planning to make it happen.

Maybe it’s martial arts, or maybe it’s something else entirely. Either way, you owe it to yourself to give it a shot — you’ve got nothing to lose and a whole new way of life to gain.
