We have all had bad days at work. Those days when you storm out at the end of the day — or shut your laptop down dramatically in the case of Covid times — swearing that this week will be your last, and you’re ready to put in your notice.
This feeling is hardly new; in fact, it seems universal. What’s more difficult to determine is if this emotional reaction is a sign it’s really time to quit or if you simply had a bad day.
Of course, it’s important to follow your gut and if you know that your job is truly making you miserable, then absolutely start looking for new opportunities.
But it’s not always that easy, now is it?
Today we will focus more on that uncertain feeling. If you are on the fence about quitting, it’s important to be open to the thoughts and feelings you are having that may just point to the exit sign.
So let’s look at some signs it might be the time to quit your job…
Signs It’s Time To Quit
- You Dread Going to Work — If you get in bed every night dreading waking up for work the next day, it may be a sign it’s time to move on. According to burnout specialist Ben Fanning, the “Sunday night blues” are very common but if your weekend starts to feel like your only happy time and you find yourself completely miserable on Sunday night, you are likely burnt out and need to quit.
- You Spend More Time Procrastinating than Working — Of course, everyone procrastinates at work on occasion. We’ve all found ourselves scrolling Facebook instead of answering emails from time to time. But if you can’t find anything engaging about your work and you are constantly looking for distractions, it’s time to consider whether your job is the right fit. You may also be distracting yourself because you are simply bored! Researchers believe prolonged feelings of boredom are a warning sign you are not doing what you want to be doing. Lynn Taylor, a national workplace expert, leadership coach, and author of “Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant” says, “If you’re no longer challenged in your position and have tried communicating with your boss to no avail, this may be a sign that it’s time to leave.”
- It’s Manifesting Poorly on Your Health — The side effects of work dissatisfaction can be far-reaching and can do just as much damage to your body as they can to your mental or emotional health. Researchers have discovered a link between job stress and acid reflux symptoms like heartburn and nausea. If your stomach’s constitution isn’t what it used to be, this could be a sign that your job is taking its toll on your body, and no job is worth destroying your body.
- You Constantly Complain About Your Job — Are you constantly venting to friends and family about your job, your co-workers or your workplace? Does it seem like these topics of conversation overshadow any others? If so, it’s probably time to move on. A job should bring positive energy into your life, not negative.
- You’re Overqualified — In a job, you sometimes have to put in the time, take what you can get, and stick it out, hoping you can prove to your superiors that you are capable of and deserve more responsibility. However, if you find yourself stuck in the same position years later and you aren’t using your skills to the best of your abilities, you should consider other options. - There’s No Room For Growth — Sometimes, getting stuck in a job you love results in comfort but not in growth. Every job should enhance your skills, and if you aren’t learning anything new, you are not becoming a more valuable employee. Marc Cenedella, founder and CEO of career resource The Ladders says, “Because the modern economy, and modern employers, value responsiveness so much, it’s important that you not only learn new things, but that you keep learning, all the time.”
- The Work Environment is Negative — Many factors can contribute to a negative work environment. One of the most common things that make work environments hellish are bad bosses, and a bad boss can affect your life outside of work. A pessimistic work-life can quickly kill the passion you have for your job, so if you feel this happening, get out quick!
- You Don’t Fit With the Company Culture — If you’re working a nine-to-five job but are craving a more flexible schedule, you will never be happy with the job, even if the other aspects of the position are great. It’s important to think about the lifestyle you aspire to maintain and make sure your job can fit into that. If it can’t, start looking for jobs that better align with your life goals and values.
- You Can’t Speak Up — Sallie Krawcheck, CEO and co-founder of Ellevest, says that one big sign it’s time to quit a job is if you’re constantly worried about saying the right thing. “I’ve worked in cultures in which ‘no idea is a bad idea’ and in ones in which you had to watch what you say,” Krawcheck notes. You should feel comfortable enough at your job to voice your opinions, share your thoughts and speak up for yourself. If you can’t do anything of these things or are constantly worried about how your words will come across, you should start looking for a new place to work where your words don’t have to be censored.
- You Are Worried About Money — Most people worry about money from time to time, but if the feeling is constant and overwhelming, you need to explore that. Have you been at a company long enough where you can speak to management about a raise? If your company does not agree that you deserve pay consistent with your workload, start looking for a company that does.
These are just a few of the things to look for if you are contemplating leaving your job. Whenever possible, be strategic about timing your leave. It’s always best to have another offer secured before you leave your job. Hopefully, this list helped you realize you don’t have to be miserable at work, and it’s okay to start looking for a job that will improve your quality of life.
